Welcome to Mali !

Mali, in the centre of West Africa, is about 5 times the size of the UK,
with a population of about 11 million. At least 36 languages are spoken, the official language being French.

I've been in Mali since August 2003. I spent the first year or two learning the Bambara language. From September 2005, I've been living in the town of Koutiala - Mali's cotton capital, working with the Minyanka translation and literacy team.

In 2004, I spent four months language learning in a village. What was it like there?
